Blade Care

Knife Care Guide

Welcome to BSP Knifeworks, where each knife is a unique masterpiece crafted with precision and passion. To ensure your BSP knife stands the test of time and delivers peak performance, follow our comprehensive knife care guide:

**1. Initial Handling and Cleaning:

  • Before first use, gently hand wash the blade to remove any oils from the manufacturing process.
  • Avoid using harsh detergents or abrasive pads. Instead, opt for a mild dish soap and a soft sponge.
  • Dry the knife promptly after cleaning, paying attention to the handle and any crevices.

**2. Avoid Dishwashers:

  • Never put your knife in the dishwasher. The combination of heat and water pressure can damage both the blade and the handle.
  • Dishwasher detergents are often abrasive and can harm the knife's finish.

**3. Storage Tips:

  • Store your knife in a secure place to prevent damage and ensure safety.
  • Consider using a magnetic knife rack or a knife block for convenient and safe storage.
  • If storing the knife long-term, apply a light coat of mineral oil to protect against rust.

**4. Handling Acidic Foods:

  • Be mindful when cutting acidic foods as they can affect the surface color of the blade, creating a natural patina.
  • Embrace the patina, as it enhances the knife's character and provides added protection against rust.

**5. Cleaning and Drying After Use:

  • After each use, wash the knife with a mild dish soap, and immediately dry the blade and handle.
  • Avoid leaving the knife in the draining rack, as water drops can form rust spots.

**6. Edge Care and Maintenance:

  • Regularly use a leather or balsa wood strop, or a fine ceramic honing rod, to maintain the sharpness of the edge.
  • Stropping realigns the edge and can be done as often as needed to keep the knife sharp.
  • If honing becomes less effective, it's time for sharpening.

**7. Sharpening Techniques:

  • Sharpening removes metal and creates a new edge. Use quality sharpening stones for optimal results.
  • If you're uncertain about sharpening, practice on other knives first or take advantage of our free lifetime sharpening service.

**8. Special Considerations:

  • Understand the limitations of your knife. For example, thin kitchen knives are not suitable for cutting bones, hard shells, or frozen items.
  • Hunting/utility knives are not substitutes for screwdrivers or pry bars.

**9. Lifetime Commitment:

  • At BSP Knifeworks, we offer a lifetime commitment to the quality and performance of our knives.
  • If your knife encounters any issues, please reach out. We're here to fix or replace the knife, ensuring your complete satisfaction.
