Knife Sharpening, Repairs & Restoration

Professional knife sharpening, repairs, rehandling and restoration from my workshop in Maudsland on the Gold Coast.

Whether it’s an everyday kitchen knife that has lost its edge, a hunting knife that needs some attention, a high-end Japanese blade, or an older knife with sentimental value that needs bringing back to life, I can usually help.

For standard sharpening, turnaround is typically next day.

Standard Knife Sharpening

I sharpen kitchen knives, chef’s knives, cleavers, pocket knives, hunting knives and other general-use blades.

Each knife is sharpened according to its steel, geometry and intended use rather than forcing every blade into the same edge.

Pricing

Blade length Price
Under 16cm $15
16 to 23cm $18
24cm and over $22

If a knife needs minor edge repair, chip removal or geometry correction before sharpening, an additional $5 to $15 may apply depending on the work required.

Japanese & High-End Knife Sharpening

Japanese knives, harder steels and thin high-performance blades require a little more care.

As a knifemaker, I regularly work with carbon steels, stainless knife steels and Japanese-style blades. These knives can be sharpened by hand using water stones, with attention paid to the original geometry and intended edge.

Where required, the service can also include thinning behind the edge to restore cutting performance rather than simply sharpening over an existing problem.

Water-Stone Sharpening

Small knives: from $35

Standard chef’s knives around 190mm to 220mm: typically $55 to $65

Single-bevel knives, significant thinning, major chip removal or more complex correction work may be quoted individually.

Knife Repairs

Sometimes a knife needs more than sharpening.

Repairs may include:

  • chipped edges
  • damaged or broken tips
  • geometry correction
  • thinning
  • minor handle repairs
  • loose fittings
  • blade clean-up
  • general maintenance

I’ll inspect the knife first and let you know what can realistically be done before carrying out any substantial work.

Rehandling Knives

Rehandling a knife can transform a good blade, but it is not always economical on a low-value knife.

Before taking on a rehandle, I’ll usually ask whether the knife has sentimental value or significant monetary value, because a proper rehandle involves a fair amount of labour.

A simple rehandle using black G10 starts from $165.

Premium timbers, stabilised woods, micarta, G10 colours and other synthetic or natural handle materials are priced accordingly.

More complex construction, unusual tangs, difficult fittings or restoration work may also affect the final price.

If you’re unsure whether your knife is worth rehandling, send me a few clear photos and I’ll give you an honest assessment.

Knife Restoration

Older, damaged or neglected knives can often be brought back into service.

Restoration work may include:

  • removing damaged or deteriorated handles
  • cleaning corrosion from the tang
  • fitting new timber or synthetic handles
  • replacing pins or fittings
  • blade clean-up
  • edge restoration
  • tip repair
  • refinishing where appropriate
  • general refurbishment

I try to preserve as much of the original knife as practical rather than turning an old knife into something it was never meant to be.

Every restoration job is different, so restoration work is quoted individually after inspection.

If the knife has sentimental value, family history or is otherwise important to you, let me know. That can affect how conservatively I approach the work.

Before & After Restoration

A damaged or deteriorated knife does not always need to be replaced.

Handle damage, corrosion around the tang, worn edges and years of use can often be repaired while retaining the original character of the knife.

Assessment

For repairs, rehandling and restoration work, I’ll inspect the knife and discuss what needs doing before I start.

If additional work or materials are required, I’ll confirm the cost with you first.

Free Lifetime Sharpening for BSP KnifeWorks Knives

Every BSP KnifeWorks knife includes free sharpening for life.

When your BSP knife needs more than a quick touch-up at home, bring it back to the workshop or send it in and I’ll sharpen it free of charge.

You cover the cost of postage to and from the workshop.

If you’re posting the knife, the easiest option is to include a prepaid Australia Post satchel for the return journey.

While the knife is here, I’ll also give it a general check-over and let you know if I spot anything that needs attention.
